Volunteers Needed For North Americans

Volunteers will play a critical role in the success of the North American Orienteering Championships which will be held in Whitehorse August 17-24. Most volunteer jobs do not require orienteering skills.  And most jobs allow you to compete — which we hope you will! Read about the volunteer jobs needed at the NAOC Volunteer Page, or go straight to the VOLUNTEER REGISTRY for a complete list of all the available volunteer jobs and to sign up to volunteer.

Yukon Orienteering Fundraising Drive

In August 2018, Yukon will be hosting the North American and the Canadian Orienteering Championships. This requires us to undertake some very significant mapping initiatives this year, at a cost of approximately $40,000.

These costs include wages for the mappers as well as associated administrative, hosting and travel costs.

While some of this amount will be covered by our funding partners (Yukon government, City of Whitehorse), YOA is also seeking help from its members to help offset these costs. We believe this is the first time in our 30+ year history that we have made such a request. Not all members can help out with the technical aspects of organizing our events, or coaching; but this initiative is one way all members can contribute to the Association.

There are a number of ways you can help:

  • Volunteer to assist with a YOA community or highways litter pick-up in May. We may have 3-4 of these; dates and locations yet to be confirmed. Contact Ross Burnett at rossupnorth(at) if you are able to help with a litter pick-up.
  • Donate your recycling revenues to YOA. We have set up an account at Raven Recycling. When you take your empties in (pop, beer, wine, juice containers, etc.), just tell them you would like to donate the proceeds to the Yukon Orienteering Association. Even small amounts will add up with many people doing this.
  • We are also seeking direct donations. No amount is too small. Contact the YOA Treasurer (Ross Burnett) at rossupnorth(at), or drop a cheque for YOA off at the Sport Yukon office (4061 4th Ave.)
  • If you have other fundraising ideas, contact Ross Burnett at rossupnorth(at)
